Write Away Writing Tips

At Write Away Books we’re big believers in helping writers develop and produce their best work. As part of this commitment, we’re pleased to provide this list of tips on making every minute count for you.

Every other day, we offer you a writing tip on Instagram to stimulate and expand your writing practice. These come from Robert Yehling’s two books for writers, “Writes of Life” and “The Write Time: 366 Exercises to Fulfill Your Writing Life”, as well as others we’ve conjured up and used in our work.

Here are a few thoughts, with more being added every week. Be sure to check back regularly…because the only thing we want is for you to be able to write well.

Jump off the Cliff — and fly!
Not literally, of course, but open the New Year with something fresh you haven’t written about before. Or, write in a genre you’ve never tried.

Writing new subjects and in unfamiliar genres instantly stretches our writing muscles and adds to what is capable in our stories, journal entries and books. Enjoy!

What inspires you?
What prompts your heart, mind and soul to expand, to go beyond your thoughts? Is it a natural setting? A person? A moment in time? Your prayer or meditation today?

Write a couple paragraphs about that place, then try to go within that place and write from the inside-out — from how you’re feeling while inspired. Keep going and see what you might create.

Writing while inspired often brings out the best and most compelling stories, poems, entries and chapters. And it’s great to refer to when you’re feeling sluggish and want to get the writing motor going. Nothing like our own supercharged words to make it happen!

Have a great day — and Write Away!

It’s a cold, wintry Saturday which means Story Writing Day!

The mementos of our life journeys make excellent departure points for short stories, memoir, essays, poems, songs and even novels. Look at these objects, pick one, drop your pen to paper or fingers to keyboard, and see where it takes you. Let the object be your guide, and have a blast writing fiction or real-life from it.

Write Away, everyone!

Writing your growing up decade.
What decade did you grow up in? What about it do you carry with you every day? What lifestyle, music, political, educational, event-based or other features help define who you are now?

Write a piece about your growing up decade, looking specifically for the aspects of it that helped make you — and what you wished was still part of your life today.

Have fun with this one as you write away!

That Seasonal Feeling.
How does winter make you feel? Where do its smells carry you, remind you of? What do you hear in its silence? Like to touch among its natural textures? Using flash fiction, write a 250 word (maximum) story in which you express the body of winter as if it were your own, to either a friend, random person, or for sci fi buffs, an extraterrestrial. Use setting, dialogue and movement. Get to some resolution or realization within your story. Flash fiction is a great way to refine our perceptions to clear, concise moments or stories…

Ready? Set? Write away!

What’s in a bookmark? Or on it?
I love bookmarks. I have a collection of hundreds from all over the world. Each one means something different, tells a different story, reminds me of a specific moment or event. Or book. A mini memoir can exist within each.

Look at these bookmarks or those you have at home. Write a story about whatever captivates you about the bookmark, or where it takes you in your own life. Even try a flash fiction or short story. Bookmarks are great sources of ideas— try them out!

Write Away on this stormy cold weekend…
